Curtains...

And we take this image away with us, as one of the greatest luminaries of the game hangs up his boots, to mark an end to a glittering career. David Beckham. The name defined an era in football. A name that found its way into every household, every street, on the backs of one out of every five jerseys, worn by enthusiastic kids playing on the streets.

He was by no stretch of the imagination, one of the greatest players of the game. There are too many in the history of the sport who far outshine him in technique and ability. Players who have made a much stronger impression in shaping the history of the game. However, having said that, in footballs glorious history, it will be very hard to find a better ambassador of the sport. He brought into the game, the glitz, the glamour. He brought into the game, royalty and class. Millions tuned in just to watch him play. Whether it was those delightful set pieces, those inch perfect long balls, those, curling shots that defied the laws of physics to find its way into the back of the net, or just to watch him. The man, for his good looks, his hair style, his poise, the way he carried himself on the football field. There was something almost royal about him. The man oozed class in whatever he did. There were the Zidane's and the Figo's and the Scholes's amongst many who, as footballers far outshone him in ability, but everyone wanted to be David Beckham. Such was the charm that he brought to the football field.

Today, after many long years since that goal from the halfway line a teenager scored against Wimbledon, many years of glory, many delightful moments, many controversies, and heartbreaks, it all ends. When in the 82nd minute, the numbers came up for one last time, as emotions poured out, the noise, the cheers, the crescendo of applause, and the tears, all faded into black, as David Beckham leaves the beautiful game, a better albeit poorer place than ever.
